The Power of Educational Games

Many children struggle to achieve in school. Some fit right into the system and do exceptionally well, while others seem to be a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

A young man I knew years ago was that "square peg" struggling for success in anything. He seemed to have some kind of learning problem but no one could pinpoint exactly what it was. Then his intuitive 3rd grade teacher noticed his significant artistic abilities. She began to tailor his education around his abilities. He was allowed to "express" his history assignment, or English assignment, or whatever assignment, by drawing his representation of it. The young man blossomed! He came out of his shell and began to participate more in class and do his assignments in the same way as his classmates. You know the ending of this story — he thrived and went on to an artistic career.

The point I'm making is that any possible way to help children learn, be it games, art, or hands-on activities, is worth the effort. Discover how your child learns. What are their abilities? Then capitalize on them — whether in after school activities or homeschooling.

There are hundreds of places to find games and print-out exercises — both online and in specialty stores.
